Jered grew up as the fourth generation on the family farm, 3 miles west of Smoky Lake, Alberta. After highschool, he partnered with his father in an intensive hog and grain operation. The hog market crash in 1998 left the farm in dire circumstances, forcing Jered to work off the farm doing various jobs.  Called back to his farming roots after several years, he began researching natural, sustainable farming practices, and has been building Serben Free Range ever since.

Julia Serben is a lifelong gardener, empassioned food production critic, and a farming rookie. She married Jered on April 30, 2011, and is learning the ropes on the farm.

Nick Wolanski grew up near Smoky Lake, AB and has a Masters of Animal Science from the University of Alberta. Nick is interested in local food production, harvesting of wild foods and sustainable farming practices. He assists on the farm as needed during busy times, provides help at Farmers' Markets, and is our trusted farm-sitter when we need a day or two away.
